This was the second time I had heard someone mention the idea of evaluating attachments in a matter of a week...
And I tend to pay attention to ideas when they're mentioned more than once...especially from trusted sources.
Last week, I interviewed the music artist Ollie Gabriel. He mentioned that one of the biggest changes he's made that's contributed to his happiness is reevaluating the things in life that he's attached to.
Most notably, he mentioned how he took 2 years away from music after recognizing that he was attaching his identity to his ability to produce music.
Then, this week I interviewed Bo Bennett. Bo is an expert in critical thinking and reasoning.
He noted how dangerous it can be to your mental health to attach your identity to ideologies because it narrows your scope of thinking (for instance, labeling yourself a Republican and, therefore, only agreeing with and paying attention to other Republicans).
Both Ollie and Bo were hitting on a very important and dangerous point...
When you attach your identity to things, jobs, relationships, or ideas, you make it more challenging to actually enjoy life.
Attachment tends to lead to a scarcity mindset...believing that there are few good options in the world...and to a belief that you are not worthy if you don't have the thing you're attached to.
ACTION:
When you feel like someone is attacking you because they're saying something about an idea you agree with or your car or you purse, ask yourself if you need to evaluate your attachments.
Until next time, get yourself unattached...
