My lifting partner, Bob, and I were talking after our workout the other day when I said...
"You know what's changed the most about being in the gym...nobody knows how to interact and have fun any more"
Now, admittedly I'm spoiled because, over the last 10 years, I've owned a fitness studio that was built around interacting with the community.
But even before I had the studio, when I went to a "regular" gym, everyone talked to each other...everyone knew each other...and everyone pushed each other to get better.
Now, everyone's too damn busy sticking their damn heads in their phones, completely siloed from the world because they have their damn noise-canceling headphones on (you can tell this irritates me, I'm sure).
Ironically, it's the exact same thing in the real world...people stuck in their phones, siloed from the outside world.
Now, what does this have to do with your workouts, you ask?
Well, a lot...
The people who stick with exercise and enjoy their workouts are the people who have a strong connection to others at the gym...that could be a friend you go with or just someone you talk to when you're there (again...the same can be said for life...those who have strong connections with other people tend to enjoy life more).
So get your head out of your phone and make some connections...see how much your workout enjoyment changes.
ACTION:
For this week, keep your headphones at home and your phone in your gym bag (or, even better, in your car) and make one new connection at the gym. It'll change your experience.
Until next time, get out there and step into growth...
