Watch Out for Those Chronic Use Injuries

Tuesday, August 13, 2024

I was helping one of the guys at the gym this morning with his golfer's elbow.

For those of you haven't had golfer's elbow, it's when you have pain on the inside of your elbow right below the bone (called the medial, or inner, epicondyle for you know-it-all nerds like me).

Golfer's elbow is a chronic use injury that ironically is caused less by golf today and more by working on a computer (I saw this injury regularly during the 10 years I owned the fitness studio).

Chronic use injuries are injuries that build up over time...

They start as nagging aches and progress to excruciating pain...that is, unless you "nip it in the bud" from the start.

If you address a chronic use injury the moment it starts to bug you, there's a good chance you can have it healed within days or weeks.

If you wait and put it off until it's a debilitating injury (like most people do), that same issue will take months and potentially years to heal.

The irony is, the same can be said about overcoming failure...

Most people let failures become "chronic use injuries"...

They don't address them, fix them, and continue down their path soon enough, so that seemingly small failure then becomes a chronic belief that "I'm not able to achieve my goals"...

Which is much harder to heal from.

ACTION:

Failure is a part of life (as are chronic use injuries). When you're confronted with a failure, quickly address what went wrong, fix the issue, then get back into action ASAP.

Because the longer you stay out of the game, the harder it is to get back in.

Until next time, here's to your 1% growth everyday...
